Why Are Filipinos Obsessed with Christmas?
It’s no secret that the Philippines celebrates the longest Christmas season in the world, beginning as early as the first of September and lasting until the Feast of the Three Kings in January. The season is filled with joy, love, and cheer, serving as a time for Filipinos to showcase our rich holiday culture and cherished traditions such as Simbang Gabi, Noche Buena, and caroling, among many others. But when did this all begin? And why do Filipinos love Christmas so much?
A season shaped by celebration and faith
The Philippine Christmas season begins as early as September and continues into January. It brings together long-standing traditions such as Simbang Gabi, Noche Buena, and caroling with the Filipino love of festivals, food, music, family, and community gatherings.
Community feasts existed across the archipelago before colonization. The arrival of Spanish rule and Christianity added Christmas observances, blending religious practice with local traditions of thanksgiving and togetherness.
From Simbang Gabi to the “-ber” months
Simbang Gabi is a series of nine dawn masses held before Christmas. The early schedule allowed farming communities to attend before work, while parol lanterns—associated with the Star of Bethlehem—lit the way to church and became an enduring symbol of the season.
American-era influences later popularized Christmas cards, decorated trees, Santa Claus, carols, and commercial displays. Over time, those influences joined local customs and helped create today's familiar rhythm: decorations appear as the “-ber” months begin, holiday music fills the air, and gatherings continue for months.
Why lights remain central
Many Filipino Christmas customs happen after sunset, including Simbang Gabi, night markets, caroling, and Noche Buena. Parols, street displays, and lights on homes mirror the warmth and joy of those nighttime gatherings, making illumination part of both the practical setting and the visual language of the celebration.
